2,045 Buddhists Participate in Indonesia Tipitaka Chanting at Borobudur

Magelang (ANTARA) - A total of 2,045 Buddhists from various regions in Indonesia and abroad participated in the Indonesia Tipitaka Chanting (ITC) and Asalha Mahapuja 2570 BE/2026, held from 24 to 26 July 2026 at the Lumbini Park within the Borobudur Temple complex, Magelang Regency, Central Java.

The Chairman of the ITC and Asalha Mahapuja 2570 BE/2026 Committee, Bhikkhu Gutadhammo Mahathera, stated on Friday that this national-scale event serves as a platform for preserving Buddhist teachings while reinforcing Dhamma practice through the recitation of the Tipitaka scriptures. He noted that this year’s event held special significance as it coincided with the Golden Jubilee of the Sangha Theravada Indonesia.

"This year’s ITC and Asalha Mahapuja is very special because it coincides with half a century of the Sangha Theravada Indonesia. Enthusiasm among the faithful was also very high, with many more wishing to register, but the venue capacity could only accommodate 2,045 participants," he said.

In addition to reciting suttas, participants received explanations on Majjhima Nikaya 71-80 delivered by bhikkhus competent in Buddhist education. This approach was taken to ensure participants not only read but also understood the meaning of the teachings contained within. He emphasised that the Indonesia Tipitaka Chanting is not merely an annual religious agenda, but a space for genuine learning and practice of the Dhamma for Buddhists from various regions.

The Director General of Buddhist Community Guidance at the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Supriyadi, expressed appreciation for the consistency of the Sangha Theravada Indonesia in organising the Indonesia Tipitaka Chanting annually. "The most important thing is not just gathering, but how participants truly practice the teachings learned. Reading the Tipitaka is a learning process, while the ultimate goal is to make Dhamma values a habit and character in daily life," he said.

He conveyed that through the organisation of the ITC and Asalha Mahapuja 2570 BE/2026, the government and the Sangha Theravada Indonesia hope this activity will further strengthen Buddhist fellowship, enhance understanding of the Tipitaka scriptures, and encourage the practice of moral values and virtues in social life.
