197 Inmates at Karangasem Prison Receive Sentence Reductions, 4 Immediately Freed

A total of 197 inmates at the Class IIB Karangasem Penitentiary have received special remissions for the Nyepi and Eid al-Fitr holidays in 2026. Of the hundreds of inmates who received these sentence reductions, four have been declared free immediately.

The head of the Class IIB Karangasem Penitentiary, I Wayan Bondan Wahyu Kusuma Dusak, detailed that the special Eid al-Fitr remission was given to 114 wards. Meanwhile, the Nyepi remission was granted to 83 wards.

“So in total, there are 197 wards who received remissions,” said Bondan on Saturday (21/3/2026).

The sentence reductions received by the inmates vary, with the lowest being 15 days. The types of crimes committed by the recipients of this year’s Eid al-Fitr remission include narcotics cases with 43 people, theft (41), child protection (9), embezzlement (6), murder (4), assault (3), fraud (3), ITE (2), traffic (2), and morals (1).

Meanwhile, the recipients of the Nyepi remission are mostly inmates in narcotics cases, numbering 35 people. There are also inmates in theft cases with 23 people, child protection (18), murder (3), embezzlement (2), and assault (2).

Bondan stated that one of the requirements for wards to receive remission is having served a prison sentence for six months. He hopes that the wards become better individuals during the remainder of their detention and when they return to society.

“The main requirement (for receiving remission) is good behaviour while in the penitentiary,” he added.
