195 Mosques in Yogyakarta Prepared as Rest Areas for Homebound Travellers During Eid 2026
YOGYAKARTA — A total of 195 mosques across Yogyakarta Special Region have been prepared as rest areas and stopping points for homebound travellers during the Eid 2026 migration period. These mosques have been designated as Traveller-Friendly Mosques to provide worship facilities and comfortable resting places for people undertaking long-distance journeys.
The Traveller-Friendly Mosque initiative represents an effort by the Ministry of Religious Affairs to provide additional facilities for travellers passing through various main routes, including across the Yogyakarta region. “The latest update shows 195 mosques have been prepared as stopping points and rest areas for homebound travellers,” stated Nurhuda, Acting Head of the Islamic Affairs Division at the Yogyakarta Regional Office of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, on Monday, 9 March 2026.
Nurhuda explained that the hundreds of mosques are distributed along strategic routes across Yogyakarta. The mapping of these mosques was conducted to ensure that places of worship could also be utilised as comfortable resting locations during the homecoming journey. Beyond serving as prayer facilities, the mosques are expected to provide proper rest areas for travellers exhausted from their long journeys.
“We want to ensure that mosques are not merely prayer halls, but truly become comfortable resting places for weary travellers during their journeys,” Nurhuda added.
Bantul Regency emerged as the region with the most substantial preparations, deploying 99 mosques. This effort is followed by Sleman Regency, which has prepared 40 mosques at crucial points along main routes.
Additionally, Nurhuda stated that Kulonprogo Regency has contributed by preparing 25 mosques, followed by Gunungkidul Regency with 18 mosques ready to serve tourists and travellers along the southern route. “In Yogyakarta City, there are 9 strategically located mosques recorded as ready to receive travellers during the 2026 Eid period, with additional facilities bringing the total to 195 mosques,” he concluded.
