194 sub-districts in Jakarta now free from open defecation
The Jakarta Provincial Government has recorded that 194 out of 2rag 267 sub-districts, or 72.65 per cent, are now officially Open Defecation Free (ODF).
“With the declaration in Tomang sub-district, the number of sub-districts with ODF status has increased to 72.65 per cent, or 194 sub-districts,” stated the Deputy Governor of Jakarta, Rano Karno, in Tomang, Grogol Petamburan, West Jakarta, on Monday.
Rano noted that this achievement demonstrates Jakarta’s potential to become a city that is not only economically advanced but also superior in environmental health quality and community welfare.
According to him, ODF status is not merely an administrative achievement, but represents a change in community behaviour that directly impacts the reduction of environmental-based disease risks, improved child health, and the creation of more comfortable residential environments.
He emphasised that this commitment must be maintained through community consistency and collaboration between various parties, including the government, healthcare workers, community cadres, local neighbourhood heads (RT/RW), PKK, community leaders, the business sector, and all elements of society.
Deputy Governor Rano expressed hope that Tomang sub-district could serve as an example for other areas, so that more sub-districts can achieve full ODF status.
“In doing so, Jakarta can grow as a healthy, comfortable, and dignified global city,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Mayor of West Jakarta, Iin Mutmainah, stated that the West Jakarta City Government will continue to optimise the provision of sanitation facilities in several areas that require them.
