19 inmates at Tanjungpinang Narcotics Prison granted special Waisak remission in 2026

Tanjungpinang (ANTARA) — A total of 19 inmates at Tanjungpinang Class IIA Narcotics Prison in Riau Islands Province (Kepri) have been granted special Waisak remission for 2570 BE/2026 CE. ‘The granting of remission rights is part of the national policy of the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections (Kemenimipas),’ said Aris Munandar, Head of the Riau Islands Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections (Kanwil Ditjenpas), after presenting the remission at Tanjungpinang Narcotics Prison on Sunday. Aris stated that nationwide, the Directorate General of Corrections has granted special Waisak remission and sentence reductions to 1,052 Buddhist prisoners and inmates who meet administrative and substantive criteria. Waisak, he said, is expected to serve as a moment for inmates to reflect on their spiritual and moral improvement before reintegrating into society. ‘The remission also brings positive effects in the form of national food budget savings amounting to hundreds of millions of rupiah,’ Aris said. The breakdown includes six inmates receiving a one-month sentence reduction, eight receiving one month and 15 days, and five receiving two months. ‘Tanjungpinang Narcotics Prison is committed to implementing rehabilitation while ensuring inmates’ rights are upheld in accordance with applicable laws,’ Aris said.
