Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung mobilised a combined inter-agency task force to handle the landslide disaster at Zone 4a of the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Facility (TPST) in Bekasi, West Java. A total of 19 excavators and seven ambulances were deployed to the site to accelerate evacuation and victim assistance.

The combined task force consisted of personnel from Basarnas, Metro Jaya Regional Police, the Indonesian Military (TNI), Jakarta and Bekasi City Disaster Management Agencies (BPBD), and the Fire and Rescue Service. Pramono emphasised that the immediate priority was ensuring all victims received maximum care.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday 8 March at 14:30 WIB, claimed four lives. The deceased comprised two General Infrastructure and Facilities Support Officers (PJLP) from the Jakarta Environmental Services Agency and two civilians.

Pramono stated that the Jakarta Provincial Government would accept full responsibility for the victims. PJLP officers who died would receive compensation from the Workers’ Social Security Agency (BPJS Ketenagakerjaan) in accordance with applicable regulations.

“The Jakarta Provincial Government ensures that deceased PJLP officers from the Environmental Services Agency will receive compensation from BPJS Ketenagakerjaan. Meanwhile, for injured victims, all medical treatment costs will be fully covered by the provincial government,” Pramono said at Jakarta City Hall on Monday 9 March.

The Bantargebang TPST landslide involved a waste heap 50 metres high. Authorities continued investigating the precise causes of the collapse at Zone 4a whilst maintaining personnel on-site to prevent secondary landslides. The incident serves as a stark warning to the Jakarta Provincial Government to immediately cease the open dumping methods still practised at Bantargebang TPST.
