172 Railway Crossings to be Closed, 1,638 Others to be Revitalised

There are currently 3,674 level crossings, with 1,810 sites identified as priorities for intervention. Of these, 172 crossings are slated for closure, while 1,638 others will have their safety aspects upgraded progressively,” stated KAI in a post on its official Instagram account, viewed on Tuesday (5/5/2026).

KAI emphasised that these steps are a priority for the company. KAI has recorded 948 accident victims at illegal crossings over the period from 2023 to 2026.

“The data also underscores the urgency. Over the 2023-2026 period, 948 accident victims were recorded, with around 80% occurring at unguarded crossings,” it said.

KAI noted that the measures were initiated through a kick-off meeting held with the Ministry of Transportation, the Directorate General of Railways, the State-Owned Enterprises Agency, Danantara, and the National Transportation Safety Committee. The intervention strategy is strengthened through cross-sector collaboration with a data-based approach, as well as technological support.

“This includes enhancing guarding, communication systems, CCTV, panic buttons for emergency situations, and the development of Automatic Train Protection (ATP) to enable faster responses during train journeys,” it said.

KAI conveyed that these steps aim to mitigate risks and create a sense of security for the public crossing the tracks.

“These efforts are implemented to ensure every action is on target, risks are minimised, and the public crossing the tracks feels safer. Because safety is a shared responsibility,” it stated.
