1,700 residents not registered for poll

MANADO, North Sulawesi: An official from the Manado municipality's Election Supervisory Committee (Panwaslu) revealed on Thursday that some 1,700 people here had yet to be registered as eligible voters in the upcoming elections.

They consisted of some 1,000 residents of Manado Utara district and some 700 residents of Malalayang district, said the committee's chairman, Frankie Mokodompis.

Mokodompis said that the residents had not been registered yet because of the technicalities involved in registration.

Some people were not at home when the officials from the Central Statistics Agency called to register them, he said.

Mokodompis urged the people involved to report to the committee and the General Elections Commission (KPU) so as to ensure they would be allowed to vote.

A total of 266,842 Manado residents are already registered as eligible voters in the upcoming elections.

Manado has a population of 411,512. -- JP
