17 firms summoned for pollution

TANGERANG: The Environmental Agency in Tangerang regency has summoned 17 of 40 industrial firms facing allegations of environmental pollution.

Most of the firms do not have any waste water treatment facilities. Some have the facilities but do not use them, while others have the facilities but they do not work properly, the agency chief, Achmad Titik Pristiwa, said on Thursday.

He said the agency would issue three warning letters to the firms, and then take the matter to court if the letters were ignored.

According to the agency, the companies that have no waste water treatment facilities are PT Warsa Indah Murni, a glassware producer; PT Maxpos, a styrofoam and cardboard producer; PT Pacinesia Chemical, a chemical producer; PT Mutindo Bumi Persada, a battery producer; PT Citra Galvalindo, an iron layer producer; PT Sinar Ancol, a detergent producer; PT Citra Cipta Sukses Lestari, a porcelain producer; PT Dong Joe, a shoe manufacturer; and PT Tenaga Tani Farma, a herbal medicine producer.--JP
