Heavy rain and high tides caused flooding in 17 areas of Surabaya on Monday (22/6), with water levels reaching up to 50 centimetres. The Surabaya Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) reported that 15 locations were still inundated as of 9:25 AM WIB, while two had receded. The highest flooding, around 50 centimetres, was recorded in the Stikosa AWS area of Nginden Jangkungan, Sukolilo District. Linda Novanti, Head of the Emergency and Logistics Division at BPBD Surabaya, stated that the flooding was triggered by intense rain since dawn. High sea levels also hampered the handling of the floods. Adi Gunita, Head of Drainage at the Surabaya Water Resources and Highways Department, explained that the high tide prevented water pumps from discharging into the sea, particularly affecting the Asem Rowo area where the Greges River had overflowed. The city government is planning permanent solutions, including the construction of 1.5 by 2 metre drainage channels in the Tanjungsari-Tambak Mayor area and a Betani pump house in the Nginden area, which is scheduled for 2026. Officials are also surveying potential blockages caused by ongoing construction projects.
