17.7 Million Travelers Predicted to Enter Central Java for Eid al-Fitr 2026
Central Java Governor Ahmad Luthfi revealed that 17.7 million people are predicted to enter Central Java during this year’s Eid al-Fitr mudik. The figure is about 2.7 million higher than last year’s mudik. ‘This year’s forecast for those entering Central Java is around 17.7 million people. Last year it was around 15 million, so there is a fairly significant increase. With that many people, all parties must be prepared because Central Java is the central hub of the national mudik movement,’ Luthfi said in Semarang on Thursday (5 March 2026). As part of preparations, Luthfi disclosed that the Central Java provincial government will complete repairs to damaged and pothole-ridden roads no later than seven days before Eid. According to data from the Public Works and Spatial Planning Agency (DPUPR) of Central Java Province, there are around 3,395 pothole sites that must be repaired before the mudik begins. Beyond road infrastructure, other measures anticipated ahead of mudik include the potential occurrence of hydrometeorological disasters, given the ongoing rainy season. ‘We also need to be wary of natural disasters, such as landslides, floods, and even the possibility of volcanic activity at Mount Merapi. Some areas such as the Muria Mountain range also deserve attention due to their vulnerability to disasters,’ Luthfi said.
