Jakarta’s Environmental Agency (DLH) removed 164 tonnes of waste following the International Labour Day (May Day) celebrations at the National Monument (Monas) in Central Jakarta on Friday, 1 May 2026. DLH Head Dudi Gardesi stated that the cleaning was carried out by sanitation workers in two shifts, from the start until the end of the event. “There were 164 tonnes of waste from the Labour Day commemoration. The entire Monas area and surroundings have been fully cleaned. This is the result of collective efforts by field personnel who worked from the beginning of the activities until completion,” Dudi said in his official statement on Saturday, 2 May 2026. The Central Jakarta Environmental Sub-Agency and the Water Body Agency’s UPS transported about 14 large trucks or 280 cubic metres, equivalent to 98 tonnes of waste, which was stored at the Monas temporary disposal site (TPS). The East Jakarta Environmental Sub-Agency transported about 2.5 large trucks or 50 cubic metres, equivalent to 24 tonnes of waste from Jalan Medan Merdeka Timur, taken to the Bantargebang TPST. The South Jakarta Environmental Sub-Agency transported about 3 large trucks or 60 cubic metres, equivalent to 21 tonnes of waste from Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan, taken to the Bantargebang TPST. The North Jakarta Environmental Sub-Agency transported about 2 large trucks or 40 cubic metres, equivalent to 14 tonnes of waste from Jalan Medan Merdeka Utara, directly to the Bantargebang TPST. The West Jakarta Environmental Sub-Agency transported about 1 large truck or 20 cubic metres, equivalent to 7 tonnes of waste from Jalan Medan Merdeka Barat, directly to the Bantargebang TPST. Prior to the event, DLH also prepared separated waste bins at several points for easy access by visitors. This step also aimed to educate the public on getting used to sorting waste. Dudi reminded that large events like May Day can generate a lot of waste in a short time. Therefore, handling it does not only rely on personnel but also requires public awareness. “Everyone is responsible for the waste they produce. Place it in the provided bins, and if possible, sort it from the start,” he said. The event was also attended by President Prabowo Subianto and Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung.
