Universitas Indonesia (UI) is still investigating the case of alleged sexual harassment in a student chat group at the Faculty of Law (FH). This investigation involves the Task Force for Prevention and Handling of Violence (Satgas PPK) UI, the faculty, and related units at the university level.

“Up to this stage, 16 students are recorded as suspected parties involved in the incident. All are undergoing examination processes in accordance with applicable mechanisms, while upholding the presumption of innocence, justice, and protection of the rights of all parties,” said UI’s Director of Public Relations, Media, Government, and International Affairs, Erwin Agustian Panigoro, in his statement on Wednesday (15/4).

Erwin explained that the handling process has been running formally since the victim reported directly to the Satgas PPK accompanied by supporting evidence.

Additionally, supplementary reports facilitated through student representatives are also part of the investigative materials. All reports, Erwin said, are thoroughly verified to ensure the accuracy of facts and justice in decision-making.

“Based on preliminary findings, this dynamic originated from interactions in digital communication spaces that then spread widely and triggered public response. Developments in the campus environment are also a concern for the university, including emerging social dynamics as a response to the case. UI ensures that this situation has been managed so it does not escalate into physical conflict,” he stated.

In the investigation process, Satgas PPK UI operates based on institutional mandates regulated through the Rector’s Decree and the Rector’s Regulation of Universitas Indonesia Number 37 of 2025 on the Prevention and Handling of Violence in the Universitas Indonesia Environment.

This regulation was drafted in reference to the Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Regulation Number 55 of 2024, ensuring all procedures align with national standards.

Erwin noted that the ongoing handling stages include examinations of the parties, in-depth chronology analysis, evidence verification, and preparation of recommendations by Satgas PPK.

“These recommendations will later serve as the basis for university leadership in determining decisions, including the possibility of imposing academic sanctions according to the level of proven violations,” he said.

Erwin emphasised that the approach used in handling this case is victim-centred, ensuring ongoing psychological support, legal assistance, and academic support are available. The confidentiality of the victim’s identity and related parties is also strictly maintained throughout the process.

UI urges all parties not to disseminate unverified information and to avoid speculation that could disrupt the handling process.

Additionally, UI is committed to continuously strengthening the system for preventing and handling sexual violence through policy evaluations, enhancing Satgas PPK capacity, and ongoing education for the academic community.

Previously, this alleged harassment case stemmed from the circulation of screenshots of a chat group containing lewd conversations allegedly by FHUI students. In the group, they referenced other female students.

From the Instagram account of the Faculty of Law UI (@fakultashukumui), it was stated that the faculty had received reports regarding the chat group. The faculty strongly condemned the actions.
