Heavy rain with moderate to high intensity that fell on Surabaya, East Java, since early Tuesday morning (23/6) has resulted in flooding at 16 locations across the city. By midday, four of these areas were still reported to be inundated.

Linda Novanti, Head of Emergency and Logistics at the Surabaya Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), detailed that the first flooding was observed in the Benowo area around 02:34 WIB. “From the 16 inundation points we recorded, 12 locations have receded. There are still 4 locations that have not receded as of the 11:00 WIB update, namely Jalan Nginden Intan Timur, Jalan Taman Panjang Jiwo Permai, Jalan Manyar Rejo, and Jalan Raya Pandugo,” Linda said.

Water levels varied between 10 and 60 centimetres. The worst-hit point was on Jalan Simo Kalangan, Sukomanunggal, which temporarily reached 60 centimetres, followed by several other points such as Jalan Taman Panjang Jiwo Permai, Jalan Imam Bonjol, the Ngagel Kebonsari area, Kendangsari Mother and Child Hospital (RSIA), and Jalan Raya Pandugo, each reaching 50 centimetres.

The flooding spread across several sub-districts, including Benowo, Sukolilo, Tenggilis Mejoyo, Wonokromo, Sukomanunggal, Tegalsari, Gubeng, Rungkut, Wiyung, and Gunung Anyar. Some locations were near public facilities, including a hospital area.

“Handling is being carried out through suction operations by the Water Resources and Bina Marga Office (DSDABM) and the Fire and Rescue Service (DPKP), while the BPBD Rapid Response Team (TRC) continues to monitor water levels at each incident site,” Linda explained.

CNNIndonesia.com monitoring at one of the flood points on Jalan Nginden Intan Timur showed water levels reaching 30 to 50 centimetres, disrupting residents’ activities. However, some children were seen playing in the floodwaters. “This morning it wasn’t this high,” said local resident Wisnu Priyo (32).

In addition to flooding, the extreme weather caused four trees to fall across Surabaya. Based on BPBD Surabaya data, Linda stated the incidents occurred on Jalan Diponegoro in Tegalsari, Jalan T.A.I.S. Nasution in Genteng, Jalan Pagesangan Agung Baru in Jambangan, and Jalan Wiguna II in Gunung Anyar. “All four fallen trees have been handled by a joint team from BPBD and the Environmental Agency (DLH),” Linda said. The fallen trees included Tabebuia, Jackfruit, Sengon, and Trembesi species, with heights ranging from 5 to 20 metres.

Furthermore, one house on Jalan Kalijudan, Mulyorejo Sub-district, was reported to have suffered roof damage. Linda noted the report was received at 05:51 WIB. “One family head with five family members was affected, but there were no casualties or injuries,” Linda stated. The collapsed roof fell onto the front bedroom and living room. Officers immediately secured the area and distributed aid to the affected residents. “Tarpaulin installation could not be carried out because the roof frame was already decayed. However, the rear part of the house can still be occupied. For repairs, the sub-district plans to register the house under the Uninhabitable House Repair programme (Rutilahu),” Linda added.

A day earlier, heavy rain from Monday (22/6) dawn had also caused flooding at 17 points across Surabaya, with the highest inundation reaching half a metre. Flood handling was hampered by high tides that slowed the pumping of water out to sea. According to Linda, all the inundation was triggered by moderate-intensity rain that began in the early hours. To accelerate the response, BPBD Surabaya personnel and the Fire and Rescue Service (DPKP) conducted water suction and monitored conditions at the affected locations.
