$1.5m set for world volleyball teams
JAKARTA (JP): World-class women's volleyball teams - including Brazil, China, Peru and the Netherlands - will be diving and spiking for US$1.5 million in prizes at the Ultra Jaya Cup World Volleyball Grand prix.
The three-day event will be held at the Senayan Sports Complex and will start Aug. 19.
The competition will also see China fielding its top players who fought in the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, including Li Yueming, Wu Dan, Lai Yawen, Wang Yi, Gao Lin and Ma Fang.
Sutardiono, chair of the event's organizing committee, told Media Indonesia yesterday that the meet will be participated by a total of 12 squads and will use a round-robin system.
He said that the participants will compete in three qualifying rounds after being divided into three groups. Jakarta holds the preliminary round of the grand prix series along with Taipei and Seoul.
He also added that the grand final will be held in Shanghai, China in early September.
He explained that a team which wins nine matches will get $100,000 in cash. The winner of the grand final will reap $475,000 cash prize. (hdj)
