151 firms join ballot boxes tender

JAKARTA: At least 151 companies have registered themselves to
participate in the tender to produce ballot boxes for the 2004
elections, the General Elections Commission (KPU) says.

Six of them -- PT Asgarindo Utama, PT Survindo Indah Prestasi,
PT Maspion, PT Pudak Scientific, PT Phon Deang, and PT Pranamuda
Raya Mandiri -- presented their proposed specifications for the
ballot boxes on Wednesday.

Mulyana W. Kusumah said KPU would soon decide the type of
ballot boxes and select the best option from the registered
companies.

The 2004 elections may require more than 2 million ballot
boxes, according to KPU.

The production of ballot boxes for the next elections is
expected to be completed at the end of this year at the latest.
