1,500 teachers to get promotion

PURWOKERTO, Central Java: The Central Java deputy governor,
Achmad, said on Thursday the provincial administration would
promote some 1,500 contract-based teachers at state-run
elementary schools in the province to permanent status.

Currently, there are 15,000 teachers in the province who have
been employed for 10 years on a contract basis, receiving a
monthly salary of Rp 100,000.

"We have to swallow a bitter pill because we can only hire 10
percent of them because of financial constraints, but those who
have been teaching for more than five years are our priority,"
Achmad said.

He added that the administration would provide an additional
monthly allowance of Rp 50,000 for temporary teaching and
administrative staff. The province plans to allocate 20 percent
of next year's budget for education. --JP
