150 Septic Tanks to be Built in Wijaya Kusuma, West Jakarta
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The West Jakarta City Government (Pemkot Jakbar) will soon build 150 septic tanks in 10 RW areas of Wijaya Kusuma subdistrict, Grogol Petamburan, starting in June 2026.
The programme aims to meet Jakarta’s target of no longer being free from open defecation (BABS). This stems from the fact that some residents still have their waste disposal channels leading directly to waterways.
“Overall in this subdistrict, we still need around 150 septic tank points spread across 10 RW,” said the Head of Wijaya Kusuma Subdistrict, Fajar Hidayah, during a site inspection on Tuesday.
Fajar explained that the provision of sanitation facilities is being carried out in stages through collaboration with the West Jakarta Water Resources Sub-Department (Sudin SDA).
For the 2025 fiscal year, the programme has targeted two priority locations: in RW 07, consisting of three points covering the needs of 11 households (KK), and one more point for five KK in RW 05.
Entering 2026, the subdistrict has mapped new priority locations, namely in RT 11 and RT 08 in RW 07.
“Priorities remain, especially in RT 11 RW 07. This year, we plan to implement construction at two points that can accommodate around 16 KK,” said Fajar.
Fajar emphasised that his side continues to coordinate with Sudin SDA to ensure the 2026 construction is carried out on schedule.
This step is accompanied by massive socialisation to the community about the dangers of environmental pollution from directly disposing of faeces into rivers.
“These communal septic tanks have an average volume of three to five cubic metres. This is adjusted to the number of beneficiaries,” said Fajar.
Regarding maintenance after construction, Fajar mentioned that after the warranty or maintenance period from the contractor expires, the maintenance responsibility will be handed over to the residents.
“We hope that residents who have received the septic tank assistance can maintain it well. The possible costs for pumping or routine maintenance will be borne by the community on a self-help basis through the RT/RW administrators, as this is a facility provided for their collective benefit,” he concluded.
Meanwhile, the Head of RT 11 RW 07 Wijaya Kusuma, Handayani, stated that there are around 90 KK residing in the area. However, 16 KK among them do not yet have communal septic tanks.
“In RT 11, the plan is for three points for 16 KK. Here, the total is around 90 KK; the others already have septic tanks, only these 16 do not,” said the woman who has lived in the area for 50 years.
Based on ANTARA’s observation at the site at 5:00 PM WIB, the river used by some residents in RT/RW 11/07 Wijaya Kusuma for open defecation is already very murky and emits an unpleasant odour.
More than 10 KK have waste disposal channels from their homes directly to the river, because they do not have septic tanks.
Meanwhile, right in front of the RT 11 head, there are three septic tank holes that have been built under the previous programme.
