15 residents evacuated as smoke from Jatiwaringin landfill fire spreads
The Tangerang Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) reported that 15 residents of Tanjungan Mekar Village, Rajeg District, were forced to evacuate to a safe location on Tuesday afternoon due to smoke from a fire at the Jatiwaringin landfill. BPBD Head Achmad Taufik stated that those affected were mostly women and children, who have been moved to the village office. ‘Those affected by the smoke were mostly mothers and children. We evacuated them to the village office as a safe location from the fire smoke,’ he said. He explained the evacuation was carried out to anticipate the dangers posed by the waste site fire. The disaster situation remains at Alert Level I, with several hotspots still burning and firefighting operations underway. ‘We are trying to extinguish the fire to prevent it from spreading further. Although the hotspots are difficult to tackle, the priority is to stop it from reaching surrounding areas,’ Achmad Taufik added. He noted that by 9:25 PM local time, the fire at the Jatiwaringin landfill had expanded to cover approximately four to five hectares.
