148 Jumantik Cadres in Cempaka Baru Boost Capacity for Dengue Prevention
A total of 148 jumantik (mosquito larvae monitor) cadres from all community units (RW) in Cempaka Baru Urban Village, Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, took part in a capacity-building activity to strengthen their ability to educate the public and carry out early detection of dengue haemorrhagic fever (DBD).
Cempaka Baru Urban Village Secretary Hikmah Widiyanti said the activity also aimed to improve the cadres’ ability to communicate effectively with the community.
“The aim is to improve the ability of jumantik cadres to communicate with and educate residents, maintain cleanliness, and especially to prevent dengue,” Hikmah said in a written statement in Jakarta on Thursday.
She said the cadres gained an understanding of locations that could potentially become breeding grounds for mosquito larvae as well as how to provide education to the community.
According to Hikmah, the activity also served as a momentum to strengthen synergy between jumantik cadres and neighbourhood unit (RT), community unit (RW), urban village, and community health centre (puskesmas) officials in preventing the spread of dengue.
During the activity, the cadres received material on persuasive communication and public education with support from Plan Indonesia.
Hikmah said cadre development would not stop after the activity ended.
Cadres from each RW will produce a video blog (vlog) based on the material they have received.
“From the vlog we can see whether the material delivered was truly received, understood, and can be applied by the cadres while on duty,” she said.
The announcement of the video winners is planned to take place at next month’s capacity-building activity.
Hikmah expressed hope that the activity, which is held routinely every year, can improve cadre performance, especially in carrying out monitoring and early detection, so that the potential spread of dengue can be prevented from the outset.
Meanwhile, Jumantik Cadre from RT 16/RW 05, Purnama, admitted to being enthusiastic about participating in the activity.
According to Purnama, the activity provided additional insight for new cadres, while for senior cadres it was an opportunity to update their knowledge and increase their enthusiasm in providing education to the community.
“The knowledge provided is very useful for broadening our insight and makes us more enthusiastic about giving the community an understanding of the dangers of mosquito larvae and the importance of health awareness,” she said.
Purnama said the cadres were ready to apply the effective communication material they had received so that the community would actively participate in preventing the breeding of mosquitoes that cause dengue.
