147 Million People Travel by Public Transport During Eid 2026
JAKARTA – Public movement during the 2026 Eid period recorded a significant surge, with land transport remaining the backbone of travel. The latest data shows that public mobility was not only high but also continuously increasing compared to the previous year. Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi revealed that based on Mobile Positioning Data (MPD), the number of people travelling during the Eid Transport period from 13–29 March 2026 reached 147.55 million people. “The organisation of this year’s Eid Transport is a major collective effort, involving intensive cross-sector coordination between ministries/institutions, local governments, transport operators, and all related stakeholders,” said Dudy in an official statement on Monday (30/3/2026). “This collaboration is the key to ensuring that the public can undertake their homecoming and return journeys safely, securely, and smoothly,” he added. Among various modes of transport, land transport recorded substantial figures. Road transport became one of the public’s primary choices, with 3.89 million passengers, an increase of 11.64 per cent compared to 2025, which reached 3.49 million passengers. Meanwhile, ferry crossings also experienced a high surge with 5.52 million passengers, or an increase of 15.36 per cent. Transport Minister Dudy emphasised that this increase in mobility is balanced with strengthened safety aspects, such as ramp checks, field supervision, and integrated traffic control. The utilisation of technology and information systems is also continuously optimised to respond quickly to on-the-ground dynamics. On the other hand, improving service quality has become the government’s primary focus. “Transport must be an effort to move people and goods while providing a sense of safety, comfort, and certainty to the public,” said Dudy.
