146 Jakarta Markets Begin Waste Segregation at Source

Perumda Pasar Jaya has begun implementing waste segregation at source across all markets under its management, as the capital prepares for a new waste management system set to take effect in August 2026. President Director of Perumda Pasar Jaya Agus Himawan stated the programme, called the Joint Movement for Clean Markets (Geber), follows Gubernatorial Instruction No. 5 of 2026 on the Segregation and Processing of Waste from Source. “This is our shared commitment and a concrete step to create a clean, healthy, hygienic, and comfortable market environment for both traders and visitors, supporting Jakarta’s journey towards becoming a global city,” Agus said on Friday (10/7/2026). He noted that 146 markets under Perumda Pasar Jaya have now been equipped with segregated waste bins as the initial step. Agus explained that waste management can no longer rely solely on downstream processing, and reduction efforts must begin in waste-producing areas, including traditional markets. This step is increasingly critical as the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government will cease the current practice of disposing waste at the Bantargebang landfill starting August 2026. To support implementation, Perumda Pasar Jaya is running a pilot project for independent waste management at Kramat Jati Main Market in collaboration with LAPI ITB and PT FDR. A 58-member Geber Task Force has also been formed to oversee the programme, educate traders, and encourage behavioural change. “This task force will be the driving force, supervisor, and continuous educational partner for all market participants,” Agus said. He emphasised that success requires the involvement of all parties, including market managers, traders, cooperatives, and the public. Member of the Supervisory Board La Ode Basir urged that the movement be implemented consistently to become an ingrained culture, and called for measurable standard operating procedures to ensure disciplined application across all markets, proposing that cleanliness and waste segregation success be included as key performance indicators for market heads.
