143 Indramayu High School Students Suffered Poisoning After Eating Free Nutritious Meal; Provider Ready to Cover Medical Costs
Hundreds of students at SMAN 1 Tukdana, Indramayu Regency, experienced symptoms of poisoning after consuming the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) programme. The Satuan Pemenuhan Pelayanan Gizi (SPPG) Kerticala II, the provider of the MBG to the school, has stated they are prepared to take full responsibility.
According to data from the Indramayu Regency Health Office, regarding the incident that occurred on Monday (5/10/2026), 143 students are suspected of being poisoned. Of that number, eight students required treatment at a community health centre (puskesmas), five were referred to the Indramayu Regional General Hospital (RSUD), and 42 students are receiving outpatient care.
Currently, of the eight students treated at the community health centre, seven have been discharged. Meanwhile, of the five students referred to the Indramayu Regional General Hospital, three have shown improvement and have also been allowed to return home.
The students suddenly experienced dizziness, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting after consuming the MBG menu, which featured fried chicken. They were immediately rushed to several community health centres for medical attention.
Responding to the incident, Hakim, a representative of the SPPG Kerticala II partner, stated that the provider will take responsibility for the affected students. He declared that they will reimburse the medical costs for students who do not have insurance or BPJS (social security).
“God willing, we will take responsibility for this. For students who had to pay for their own treatment because they do not have insurance or BPJS, we will reimburse them,” he said.
As a gesture of good faith, he also invited the head of the Tukdana Community Health Centre to visit SMA Tukdana together this morning. The provider also intends to visit the students who were affected by the incident.
“Our goal is that if there are still students affected by yesterday’s incident who are unable to attend school, God willing, we will also visit them at their homes,” said Hakim.
As of now, the exact cause of the suspected poisoning is awaiting laboratory test results from food samples. Meanwhile, the SPPG Kerticala II kitchen has been temporarily closed while the investigation is ongoing.
