143.9 Million People Expected to Travel Home for Eid al-Fitr 2026
The Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture (Menko PMK) Pratikno has affirmed that the safety of lives constitutes the highest priority in preparations for Eid al-Fitr 1447 H/2026 M, amid projections of 143.9 million movements of people during the Eid holiday exodus period in 2026.
This statement was made during a coordination meeting for preparations for Eid al-Fitr 1447 H/2026 M at the Mutiara Auditorium, Police Science College, South Jakarta, on Monday (2 March 2026).
Based on a survey by the Ministry of Transportation, it is estimated that approximately 143.9 million movements of people will occur during the Eid al-Fitr period this year.
Pratikno stated that the government has made efforts to distribute mobility to prevent concentration at any single point in time through measured policy arrangements. “We are endeavouring to reduce pressure by creating a wider holiday timeframe, arranging school holidays, and implementing flexible working arrangements for civil servants, which is expected to reduce the burden of movement,” said Pratikno.
Beyond mobility arrangements, he noted that vigilance must be maintained regarding potential hydrometeorological disasters this year. Disaster conditions in Sumatra have not fully recovered. Rain and flooding have occurred several times in affected areas.
Outside that region, alert levels remain high, including in West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta Special Region, Bali, and Papua, which still have potential for high rainfall.
“We must work hard to maintain security; the safety of lives is the highest priority. We must work together to conduct integrated disaster mitigation,” he emphasised.
He also stressed the importance of public safety during travel, particularly for motorcyclists, as well as securing vital routes that serve as crucial points for the exodus and return journeys.
“The focus is on safety, particularly for motorcyclists. Securing vital routes must also be a collective concern for safe services,” he said.
Furthermore, services during the exodus and Eid holiday period must prioritise a humanitarian and inclusive approach, with special attention to vulnerable groups.
“Beyond safety, of course comfort is also important. We hope for a humanitarian and inclusive approach, particularly providing primary attention to vulnerable groups—children, pregnant women, and the elderly,” he concluded.
The availability of tickets in the North Sumatra Regional Division (Divre I) is actually still adequate, particularly since 11 March when the Eid transport period begins.
