143.9 Million People Expected to Travel During Eid al-Fitr, Representing 50.60 Per Cent of Indonesia's Population
Jakarta, Kompas.com – Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi announced that an estimated 143.91 million people are expected to travel during Eid al-Fitr 2026, equivalent to 50.60 per cent of Indonesia’s population.
“Based on the results of a survey on public movement during Eid al-Fitr in 2026, approximately 50.60 per cent of Indonesia’s population, or roughly 143.91 million people, are expected to travel,” Dudy stated whilst reporting the movement figures to President Prabowo Subianto during a plenary cabinet session at the State Palace in Central Jakarta on Friday (13 March 2026).
He noted that this figure represents a decline of 1.75 per cent compared to the 2025 survey, which recorded approximately 146 million travellers. “This means public mobility during the Eid period tends to exceed survey projections,” Dudy added.
Regarding transport modes, private vehicles remain the primary choice with 76.24 million exodus travellers, followed by motorcycles and buses. The predicted busiest transport hubs during Eid 2026 are Soekarno-Hatta Airport, the Merak-Bakauheni strait crossing ports, Pasar Senen Railway Station, and Pulogebang Terminal.
To facilitate smooth travel flow, the government has mobilised various transport modes comprising 31,000 buses, 840 ships, 254 ferries, 372 aircraft, and 3,687 railway units. “We have also provided free travel programmes for disaster-affected regions in Sumatra, including Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra,” Dudy stated.
National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo outlined security arrangements for this year’s exodus through Operation Ketupat 2026, themed “Safe Travel, Happy Family”. “Our target is to maintain the public satisfaction level achieved in 2025, where 90.9 per cent of people were satisfied with government performance during the holiday period. Therefore, our collective target is how to sustain or improve upon this achievement,” Sigit said.
