14 Jakarta Residents Become Traffic Accident Victims Every Day
JAKARTA - An average of more than 14 Jakarta residents become victims of traffic accidents every day. This data has become a serious concern for the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government amid efforts to reduce the number of accidents, particularly among students. “Driving is not about who is faster, but about safety,” said Assistant for Economy and Finance of the DKI Jakarta Provincial Secretary, Suharini Eliawati Suharini, on Tuesday (12/5/2026), quoted from Antara. The event under the DKI Jakarta Transportation Agency was attended by 2,000 junior high school, senior high school, and vocational high school students from five city areas in Jakarta. The activity serves as a medium for traffic safety education while strengthening relations between the government and students. In addition, the quality of transportation and the level of security in Jakarta are said to have received global recognition. “Jakarta ranks 71st in the Global Cities ranking, up from the previous 74th position. Jakarta’s transportation infrastructure also ranks 17th in the world and is crowned as the second safest city in Southeast Asia after Singapore,” said Suharini. “We are focusing education on students so that they have a strong understanding from school benches,” said Ujang. He explained that in the activity, the students not only received theoretical material but also technical road safety education and traffic etiquette. Thousands of students from various schools in Jakarta were also introduced to modern transportation systems through exhibitions of Jakarta MRT, Jakarta LRT, Transjakarta, and other related agencies. “Hopefully, through this activity, the number of traffic accidents among teenagers can be reduced while increasing public awareness to switch to safe and integrated public transportation,” said Ujang. Based on data from the National Police Traffic Directorate and PT Jasa Raharja, the number of accident fatalities has been recorded to exceed 100 people per day. Around 75 percent of those cases involve motorbike users.
