14 Accident Victims Every Day in Jakarta, 2,000 Students Receive Traffic Education
The Jakarta Provincial Government (Pemprov DKI Jakarta), through the DKI Jakarta Transportation Agency (Dishub), held traffic safety education for students at Ecovention Hall, Ecopark Ancol, North Jakarta, on Tuesday (12/5/2026). The event, titled “Jakarta Road Safety Festival 2026”, was attended by 2,000 junior high school (SMP), senior high school (SMA), and vocational high school (SMK) students. The programme was launched amid high traffic accident rates in Jakarta, which also involve teenagers. “Driving is not about who is faster, but about safety,” said Suharini on Tuesday, quoted from Antara. Based on Jasa Raharja data, an average of more than 14 people per day receive compensation due to traffic accidents. In addition, Pemprov DKI Jakarta continues to promote increased use of public transport. Currently, the public transport usage rate in Jakarta is around 22 to 23 percent. The government targets raising this figure to above 40 percent by involving students as public transport ambassadors. “Every Wednesday, civil servants (ASN) are required to use public transport. We hope that students who already have free transport facilities will also help cultivate the habit of using public transport,” said Suharini. “We are focusing education on students so that they have a strong understanding from school benches,” she added. In the event, the students not only received theoretical material but also technical road safety education and traffic etiquette. They were also introduced to Jakarta’s modern transport system through exhibitions from MRT Jakarta, LRT Jakarta, Transjakarta, Dirlantas, Jasa Raharja, and several related agencies. Ujang hopes that this activity can reduce accident rates among teenagers while encouraging the shift from private vehicles to safer and more integrated public transport. Based on data from Korlantas Polri and PT Jasa Raharja, the number of fatal accident victims has been recorded to exceed 100 people per day. About 75 percent of those cases involve motorbike users.
