13-year-old Abhinawa wins Asean junior golf c'ship

An eagle putt and four excellent birdies with a bogey-free round in the final day carded by 13-year-old Abhinawa Sahari gave him the Overall Best Gross title at the 9th Damai Indah-Panin Bank Asean Junior Championships 2003 at the Damai Indah Golf and Country Club on Friday with for a 6-under 280 (73 70 71 66).

Unchallenged and taking command from the onset in the B Division for players between the ages of 13-14 on Tuesday, Abhinawa, from the Damai Indah Golf and Country Club, hit a 6- under 66 (32 34) on Friday.

"My strategy was to play to my best and if there are chances to force the game, I just take it. Golf is my entire life and I wish I could play in a PGA Tour," Abhinawa said.

After shooting an eagle in the par-4 of the 6th, when his first drive hit right on the green and a putt for the eagle, he followed with four admirable birdies in the 8th, 9th, par-5 13th and the 15th hole.

The Special Division competition for players between the ages of 18-21, the joined leaders Alga Topan from Pondok Cabe golf club, had to settle the battle for top place in a playoff, not with his co-leader Amin Zarens from the Aspirasi 8, but against Hendry Nasim.

The lanky Hendry finally managed to defeat the long-hitting Alga after the two finished with an identical 6-over par 294 on Friday.

The winner's slot was waged in the par-4 of the 10th when Hendry parred the hole, while unlucky Alga missed the put and made a bogey.

Michael Song, playing in the A Division, scored 4-under 68 in Tuesday's opening round and was the sole leader in the field of 150 players to produce a hole-in-one.
