13 State Schools in Jakarta Hold Heritage Status, Built Before Indonesia's Independence
The Jakarta Provincial Education Office (Disdik) has revealed that many state school buildings in Jakarta are very old. Data from the office shows that a number of schools were built before Indonesia’s independence.
This was stated by the Head of the Jakarta Education Office, Nahdiana, during a meeting with Commission E of the Jakarta Regional People’s Representative Council (DPRD DKI) at Jakarta City Hall on Monday (27/7/2026). The statement was made whilst explaining a comprehensive evaluation of school building conditions following the collapse of SDN Kebayoran Lama Selatan 09.
“So I will pause this explanation with the general situation. Of our 215 state education units, if we classify them by when they were built, some of these buildings were constructed before I was even born,” said Nahdiana.
She said some schools are even older than Indonesian independence. Several of them also hold heritage building status.
“So there are buildings constructed before 1947. Among them, 13 buildings have heritage status,” she said.
Nahdiana added that, when viewed by building age, only around 40 percent of state school buildings were built within the last 20 years. For this reason, the Jakarta Provincial Government will not only focus on schools already on the revitalisation list, but will also inspect the condition of all school buildings.
“If we group them, those built in the last 20 years account for only around 40 percent,” she said.
According to Nahdiana, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has formed a school building revitalisation acceleration team. The team is tasked with inventorying and reviewing the condition of all school buildings to determine repair priorities.
The team is led by the Deputy Head of the Education Office and involves several regional apparatus organisations (OPD), including the Cipta Karya Office, Bappeda, BPKD, BPAD, the Inspectorate, the mayors of Jakarta’s administrative cities, and the One-Stop Investment and Integrated Services Office (DPMPTSP).
“It will later be determined whether a building needs total rehabilitation or only heavy rehabilitation. The team will establish construction priorities,” she explained.
She said the formation of this team also follows instructions from Governor Pramono after the collapse of SDN Kebayoran Lama Selatan 09. In addition to the inventory, an investigative team will also be formed to monitor the implementation of the revitalisation project to prevent delays and other obstacles.
“The Governor is not only setting up an inventory team; there will also be an investigation team. So during implementation, it will be investigated so that delays and other issues can be mitigated from now on,” she concluded.
