13 Japanese nationals arrested in Bogor, suspected online fraud against fellow Japanese living abroad
Bogor, Kompas.com - The Bogor Immigration Office Class I Non-TPI arrested 13 Japanese nationals in the Babakan Madang district, Bogor Regency on Monday, 2 March 2026. The group is suspected of online fraud targeting fellow Japanese nationals living abroad. Acting Director General of Immigration Yuldi Yusman said the suspects operated using the insignia of the Japanese police. ‘The 13 foreign nationals have been identified as Japanese nationals suspected of cyber activity, allegedly an organized online extortion scam employing Japanese police insignia,’ he said at the Bogor Non-TPI Class I Immigration Office on Wednesday, 4 March 2026. During the arrests, Bogor Immigration authorities seized dozens of devices, a number of routers, foreign passports, residence permits, four Japanese police uniforms, and digital documents including scripts and operational manuals for the fraud. Meanwhile, the head of Bogor Immigration Office Class I Non-TPI, Ritus Ramadhana, said the authorities are still in talks with the Japanese Consulate to deport the 13 suspects. ‘The Japanese Consulate has arrived and is awaiting further information. Deportation will be carried out to Japan, but it has not yet been determined to which prefecture (for example Tokyo or another),’ he said. After the 13 foreign nationals return to their home country, case handling will be transferred to the local police. ‘We are still awaiting directives from leadership regarding deportation and further investigation,’ he concluded. The 13 foreign nationals are currently at the Bogor Immigration Office Class I Non-TPI for further questioning. The investigations focus on alleged abuse of residence permits under Law Number 6 of 2011 on Immigration and on deepening the inquiry into cross-border fraud offences.
