123 Negara Detention Centre Inmates Receive Remission for Indonesia's 81st Independence Day, 1 Immediately Released
A total of 123 inmates at the Negara Class IIB Detention Centre (Rutan) have been granted general remission in conjunction with the 81st anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia’s independence. Of that number, one person was released immediately.
Head of the Negara Class IIB Detention Centre, I Gusti Agus Putra Mahendra, said that all of the remission proposals submitted by his office had been approved based on the Decree of the Minister of Immigration and Corrections of the Republic of Indonesia Number: PAS-1453.PK.05.03 TAHUN 2026.
“We proposed a total of 123 inmates to receive independence remission and all were approved. The details are 122 recipients of RU I (partial sentence reduction) and 1 recipient of RU II who was immediately released,” Mahendra said after the flag ceremony in the yard of the Negara Detention Centre on Monday (17/8/2026).
Mahendra explained that the amount of sentence reduction for RU I recipients varied, ranging from 1 to 6 months, depending on the length of the sentence already served. The largest group of recipients received a 3-month reduction, totalling 47 people.
The complete breakdown of RU I recipients includes 26 people receiving 1-month remission, 34 people receiving 2 months, 47 people receiving 3 months, 7 people receiving 4 months, 7 people receiving 5 months, and 1 person receiving 6 months.
“Inmates in narcotics cases dominate this remission list, because the overall population of inmates here is indeed dominated by such cases,” Mahendra added.
Meanwhile, the inmate who received RU II and was immediately released was a convict in a theft case. He received a sentence reduction of 2 months.
“Because his remaining sentence was less than 2 months, then precisely on 17 August the person concerned was immediately released,” he explained.
The detention centre emphasised that the granting of remission had followed technical and administrative procedures. Of the total 213 inmates residing at the Negara Detention Centre, only 123 people were declared to have met the substantive and administrative criteria.
Currently, the Negara Class IIB Detention Centre is experiencing a capacity crisis. The facility, which ideally has a capacity of 71 people, is now crowded with 213 inmates. Narcotics cases dominate with more than 50 percent, or 209 people.
The only inmate to immediately breathe free air, Mortado (37), admitted that he did not yet have definite plans after his release. Because no family came to pick him up, the Head of the Negara Detention Centre gave him personal money as provisions for his return home.
“I am very happy to be able to return to my hometown in Bangkalan, Madura, East Java. My family has not communicated with me since I first entered the detention centre, so I want to go out and immediately visit my child at the Islamic boarding school,” Mortado said.
