12-Year-Old Boy Dies After Drowning in Munjul Reservoir, East Jakarta

JAKARTA — A 12-year-old boy identified as R drowned in Ambalat Munjul Reservoir in Cipayung, East Jakarta on Wednesday, 11 March 2026 evening.

According to residents, the victim fell from a boat whilst playing with a friend and subsequently drowned in the reservoir, according to Muchtar, Head of the East Jakarta Fire and Rescue Sub-office, when confirmed on Friday, 13 March 2026.

Muchtar explained that five rescue personnel were deployed to conduct search and evacuation operations.

“We began the search at 21:31 WIB, and the victim was located at 22:41 WIB,” he stated.

Following recovery, the victim was transported to Cipayung Hospital in East Jakarta. However, the boy was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Meanwhile, Iptu Edi Handoko, Head of the Criminal Investigation Unit at Cipayung Police Station, explained that initially two children were feared drowned. However, the second child, who was R’s friend, was successfully rescued.

“There were two children drowning whilst playing on the boat, but one child was successfully saved,” he said.

Edi added that the victim’s family declined an autopsy to be performed on the remains.
