12 Students Injured in Accident After Unhas Community Service Programme Closure in Bantaeng
A group of students from Hasanuddin University (Unhas) participating in the 116th wave of the Community Service Programme (KKN) in Bantaeng Regency were involved in a traffic accident. The incident occurred after they attended the programme’s closing ceremony, which was held in conjunction with a simultaneous tree-planting activity in the Pinus Rombeng area, Bonto Lojong Village.
According to reports, the group from the Kayu Loe Village post was travelling in an open pick-up truck when the single-vehicle accident happened on Thursday (13/8) at around 14:00 WITA. The Head of the Community-Based Learning Sub-Directorate at Unhas, Suleha Thamrin, clarified the incident on Friday (14/8) to counter various versions circulating on social media.
Based on information from the driver, the vehicle suffered brake failure. In an attempt to stop the vehicle, the driver deliberately crashed into a tree on the side of the road. The impact caused the pick-up to overturn and roll down a lower embankment. The accident took place on the border between Bonto Lojong Village and Kayu Loe Village.
Immediately after the incident, the students were evacuated to a nearby resident’s house. The Field Supervisor Lecturer (DPK) Coordinator for Bantaeng, Putri F. Nurdin, who was not far from the location, quickly arrived and contacted the Public Safety Center (PSC). Within approximately 10 minutes, a medical team from the PSC Loka branch arrived to provide initial treatment while waiting for an ambulance.
All injured students were then taken to Anwar Makkatutu Hospital in Bantaeng and received treatment in the Emergency Unit (UGD). Their conditions were reported to be improving steadily. Shortly after arrival, five students were declared healthy and stable, four sustained minor injuries, and three required further observation, including X-rays. The X-ray results showed two students had sprained legs and one had a suspected thigh fracture.
By 21:45 WITA, Putri F. Nurdin, who had been accompanying the victims since the afternoon, reported that 10 students had been discharged that evening. Although two other students were also cleared to go home, Putri requested they be allowed to rest at the hospital as they were sound asleep. She planned to pick them up the following day for their return journey to Makassar.
Suleha Thamrin, the KKN programme manager, expressed appreciation for the swift response of the field supervisor and urged all students to remain cautious as the programme concludes. The 116th wave of the Unhas KKN is being drawn to a close, with student withdrawals from Bantaeng scheduled for 14 August 2026, alongside withdrawals from Pinrang, Gowa, Maros, Luwu, North Luwu, East Luwu, and North Toraja.
