12 RI officers to monitor cease-fire
ZAMBOANGA, Philippines (AFP): Twelve Indonesian military officers have arrived in this southern city to monitor the cease- fire agreement between the Philippine government and Moslem guerrillas, sources in the cease-fire committee said yesterday.
The observers will monitor the agreement between the government and the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF), a guerrilla group which has given up its campaign for a separate Islamic state in the southern Philippines in exchange for autonomy for the Moslem-populated regions there.
The head of the joint cease-fire committee, Philippine Marines Brig. Gen. Guillermo Ruiz, previously said the 12 observers would be deployed in this city as well as nearby Cotabato City.
The MNLF and the government agreed in talks brokered by Jakarta in September to the dispatch of the Indonesian observers.
