12 people die in bus crash

PEKANBARU, Riau: Twelve people were killed and 15 others
injured when a bus carrying 60 people plunged into a river in
Dalu Dalu village, in the Kampar regency, on Sunday, Antara
reported.

The bus, belonging to PT Riau Andalan Pulp and Paper, had been
chartered to carry employees of the company and their families to
spend Idul Fitri in North Sumatra.

However Kampar Police Chief Lt. Col. Edy Erwin said that none
of the victims were associated with the company.

It was later discovered that the bus had already dropped its
passengers in Pangkalan Kerinci in Riau after making the trip
from North Sumatra, and was on its way back to the factory.

The driver apparently decided to pick up some passengers on
the way.

Police investigating the accident believe the driver was
asleep when the bus left the road. (emb)
