119 workers go on strike

UJUNGPANDANG: One-hundred-and-nineteen workers from PT Pyramid Megah Sakti at the Makasar Industrial Estate went on strike over wages Tuesday.

A spokesman for the workers said he was paid Rp 3,750 (US$1.56) for ten-hour work a day with no food or health allowance.

"Many of us are paid Rp 1,500 a day," the spokesman said.

The new minimum wage for South Sulawesi is Rp 4,500 a day or Rp 112,000 a month.

The workers, most of whom are female, went on strike for eight hours at 8 a.m. and ended when the workers met management.

The workers also demanded to be included in the Jamsostek social security program.

The management agreed to pay the minimum wage and overtime for shifts longer than seven hours. The management also agreed to the workers social security demands. (37/jun)
