The Ministry of Religion (Kemenag) will hold the isbat session for determining Eid al-Fitr 2026, or 1 Syawal 1447 Hijriah, on 19 March 2026. The session will be held at the Auditorium H.M. Rasjidi, Ministry of Religion headquarters, M.H. Thamrin Street No. 6, Jakarta.

According to the Kemenag website, the Director General of Islamic Community Guidance, Abu Rokhmad, explained that the isbat session is the government mechanism for determining the start of Islamic months, particularly Ramadan, Syawal, and Zulhijah.

“As usual, the isbat session begins with a seminar presenting the crescent moon’s position by the Ministry of Religion’s Calculation and Observation Team. This is followed by a closed session to discuss the results of crescent moon observations submitted from various regions before being announced to the public,” said Abu Rokhmad in Jakarta on Monday (16 March 2026).

Based on astronomical calculations (hisab), on the observation day of 29 Ramadan 1447 H, coinciding with Thursday, 19 March 2026, the crescent moon’s elevation across Indonesian territory will be above the horizon, ranging between 0°54’27’’ to 3°7’52’‘. Meanwhile, the crescent moon’s elongation angle will range between 4°32’40’’ and 6°06’11’’.

According to him, all calculation systems also indicate that the conjunction preceding Syawal 1447 H occurs on 19 March 2026 at approximately 08:23 WIB. Nevertheless, the determination of the start of Syawal will await the results of crescent moon observations conducted in various regions of Indonesia.

“The establishment of 1 Syawal 1447 H will await reports of crescent moon observation results from all regions, which will then be discussed in the isbat session,” he explained.

The Ministry of Religion will conduct crescent moon observations for the start of Syawal 1447 H at 117 observation points distributed throughout Indonesia. These observations are conducted by the Regional Ministry of Religion offices together with district and city Ministry of Religion offices, Islamic Courts, Islamic community organisations, and relevant agencies in the regions.
