115 High-Risk Prisoners from South Sulawesi and East Java Transferred to Nusakambangan

A total of 115 high-risk prisoners from South Sulawesi and East Java have been transferred to the maximum-security prison island of Nusakambangan in Central Java. The operation, conducted by the Directorate General of Corrections (Ditjenpas) under the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections, involved 79 inmates from South Sulawesi and 36 from East Java. The transfer was carried out to strengthen security and improve the rehabilitation process for inmates classified as high-risk.

The South Sulawesi inmates departed from Maros Prison and travelled to Surabaya, where they were joined by the East Java cohort before proceeding to Cilacap. The convoy arrived at Wijayapura Port in Cilacap at 01:20 WIB and crossed to Sodong Port on Nusakambangan Island by 01:40 WIB. The operation was secured by 77 personnel from the Directorate of Security and Intelligence, supported by the Police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) and the Traffic Corps (Korlantas).

Ditjenpas spokesperson Rika Aprianti stated that the transfer was a strategic measure to maintain stability in the original prisons and to optimise security protocols. She emphasised that Nusakambangan serves a strategic function for high-level security and more effective rehabilitation tailored to the inmates’ risk profiles. The move is part of a broader, ongoing effort to reform the correctional system and ensure public safety.
