The Sleman District Religious Court granted 112 marriage dispensation requests throughout 2025, the majority caused by unintended pregnancies. The Sleman government is pushing for ongoing interventions to prevent underage marriages and reduce divorce risks.

Data shows the highest cases occurred in Gamping Sub-District (13 cases), Prambanan Sub-District (12 cases), and Ngaglik Sub-District (12 cases).

The Sleman Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection, Population Control, and Family Planning Agency (P3AP2KB), dr. Novita Krisnaeni, M.P.H., stated that the main factor for dispensation requests is unintended pregnancy at 89%, followed by avoiding adultery at 9%, and free socialising at 2%.

“This condition shows the need for ongoing interventions because it has the potential to cause negative impacts, including school dropout, reproductive organ health risks, and increased potential for domestic violence that can trigger divorce,” said Novita on Thursday at the Sleman Regency Government Office.

Data from the Sleman Religious Court also shows that the divorce rate in 2025 reached 1,489 cases. The highest divorces occurred in Depok Sub-District (165 cases), Gamping Sub-District (125 cases), Mlati Sub-District (109 cases), and Ngaglik Sub-District (108 cases).

Novita explained that the main causes of divorce are poor communication in the form of disputes and quarrels at 84%, followed by abandoning one party at 8.42%, and economic factors at 5.29%.

Sleman P3AP2KB continues to strengthen efforts to prevent underage marriages through various programmes, including the Family Resilience and Welfare Programme, Women’s Empowerment Programme, and Child Protection and Rights Fulfilment Programme.

“Efforts to prevent underage marriages must be carried out collaboratively involving various parties. We encourage the community to give children space to complete their education and prepare for the future to welcome Indonesia’s Golden Vision 2045,” said Novita.

The Sleman Regency Government invites all community elements to work together to prevent underage marriage practices to create a healthy and quality generation towards Indonesia’s Golden Vision.
