11-Year-Old Boy in Canada Dies After Bat Lands on His Face

A medical tragedy has befallen an 11-year-old boy in Ontario, Canada. The child died from a rabies infection after a bat landed on his face whilst he was sleeping. The heartbreaking incident occurred during a family holiday at a cottage in 2024. According to a report published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal on Monday (6/7), the chronology began when the boy woke up to find a bat clinging to his nose and mouth area. He immediately brushed the animal away, and his father managed to capture the bat using a pot before releasing it back into the wild. Initially, the parents did not take the child to a doctor because they found no bite marks, wounds, or suspicious behaviour from the animal. However, this decision proved fatal, as the rabies virus can be transmitted through minimal contact. Approximately 19 days after the incident, symptoms began to appear. A medical team from the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health at the University of Manitoba confirmed that rabies is almost always fatal once clinical symptoms manifest. This case serves as a stark reminder that any direct contact with bats must be considered a potential rabies exposure. Medical experts strongly recommend administering post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) as soon as possible after contact with a rabies-carrying animal, even if no visible bite wounds are present. Immediate vaccination is the only effective way to prevent the virus from reaching the central nervous system.
