11 suspected of inciting workers

SURABAYA: Police have detained 11 people on Wednesday for
allegedly instigating a workers' rally to mark the May 1
International Labor Day in the town of Sidoarjo, the province's
largest industrial area.

East Java Police chief Insp. Gen. Sutanto said the suspects
were being questioned on their motives.

He declined to identify the suspects.

Sutanto said the 11 suspects were caught red-handed by
security guards and local police. The suspects allegedly had been
going to several factories in Sidoarjo to encourage the employees
to stage a rally together with other workers from around East
Java.

"From our questioning, we hope to reveal which group the
suspects belong to and who financed them. (nur)
