11 Orphaned Lives Saved as Flames Devour Forest

Smoke drifted across the eastern horizon of the Samboja Special Purpose Forest Area (KHDTK) in Kutai Kartanegara, East Kalimantan, accompanied by strong winds carrying messages of danger from the forest boundaries.

Amidst the thickets and green trees spanning 3,500 hectares, there lies a 130-hectare space serving as a Forest School, a place where 11 orphaned orangutans learn to navigate life. It is here they learn to rediscover their true selves; traversing branches, picking fruit, and climbing to the canopy, weaving hopes for a free future.

However, on 1 September 202<0xC2>4, the fire arrived faster than expected, testing the readiness of every individual committed to the promise of protection. Stories of fire devouring the East Kalimantan wilderness during long droughts caused by El Niño are not new. Yet this time, on the edge of the Other Use Area (APL) bordering the rehabilitation zone, the flames rose like a red giant, leaping across boundaries. The fire threatened the hard work that had been patiently assembled over many years.

Behind the plumes of smoke and licking flames, the concern was not merely for the scorched trees, but for the future of 11 orangutans who have not yet fully recovered from the loss of their families and their first homes. Fortunately, the preparedness cultivated since the onset of El Niño proved to be a tangible fortress.

At 16:00 WITA, when the emergency status was declared, inter-agency collaboration—involving the Jejak Pulang Foundation, BKSDA East Kalimantan, Manggala Agni, and the Wildlife Rescue Unit (WRU)—united to provide a solid support system. Less than two hours later, all threatened orangutans were successfully evacuated to a safe location. The fire was finally extinguished towards dusk, leaving behind grief for the scorched earth, but allowing these precious lives to continue breathing.

This is a story of preparedness born from deep care. It is not merely a plan on paper, but an expression of love ready to fight whenever the call arises. It is a story of how, when the forest was shaken by danger, hope stood tall, refusing to surrender to the wind or the flames.
