11,925 Homes Damaged by NTT Earthquake, East Manggarai Worst Affected
The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has recorded 40,000 people displaced as a result of the earthquake in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). The largest number of displaced people is in East Manggarai Regency.
“The provisional data on displaced people that we have collected so far is 40,040 people. This does not reflect damage to houses, so we need to be careful in interpreting it, as it is due to the psychological impact felt by residents,” said Berton SP Panjaitan, Acting Head of the BNPB Data, Information and Disaster Communication Centre, on Tuesday (18/8/2026).
In East Manggarai, 966 people were recorded as sheltering at BPBD posts, while around 14,000 others were displaced independently. In total, around 15,465 people are displaced there. In East Manggarai, 25 people were recorded dead, 442 seriously injured and 513 lightly injured.
The second highest number of displaced people is in Manggarai Regency, with 6,487 people. In Manggarai, 27 people were recorded dead, 31 seriously injured and 88 lightly injured.
“The total number of damaged houses is 11,925 units, with details of 5,516 heavily damaged, 1,916 moderately damaged and 4,493 lightly damaged,” said Berton.
The areas with the highest damage are Nagekeo Regency, West Manggarai Regency and Ngada Regency.
President Prabowo Subianto is planned to visit East Nusa Tenggara to see first-hand the handling of the earthquake disaster. However, Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi said the government is still monitoring developments on the ground.
“It is being planned. It is being planned, but we also need to convey that sometimes in the early stages the conditions on the ground mean we choose to focus more on addressing the problems first,” said Pras after a coordination meeting with DPR leaders at the DPR building in Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday (18/8/2026).
Pras explained that Prabowo’s visit requires different preparations and supporting facilities compared with an ordinary visit. Therefore, the government needs to ensure conditions on the ground.
“Because the presence of a President certainly requires preparations and facilities that are not like an ordinary visit,” he continued.
Pras assured that the government continues to monitor developments in the handling of the earthquake disaster in NTT. Ministers who have gone to the location are also providing regular reports.
“So the important thing is that we monitor every day. The ministers also report, the Head of Basarnas reports to us every day, then BNPB also reports, and we also appreciate that many provincial and regional governments are also sending assistance, including for example from the Central Java Provincial Government. This is evidence of our solidarity together to help our brothers and sisters affected by the disaster,” he explained.
Meanwhile, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia said that fuel and electricity supplies in NTT were initially disrupted due to the earthquake. For now, he assured that fuel and electricity supplies are continuing to improve.
“Gradually there has been improvement, including electricity. Initially many affected areas experienced blackouts, now gradually we have been able to resolve it,” said Bahlil at the Golkar Party headquarters in West Jakarta on Tuesday (18/8/2026).
The Golkar chairman acknowledged that distribution has not yet fully recovered. However, he assured that relevant parties are working hard to ensure supplies at the disaster location improve.
“Of course it is not yet 100 per cent because the main substation is already on, but supply to the location still needs a little more time. But we will continue to work hard. The President Director of Pertamina and PLN were still at the disaster location yesterday and we are very serious,” he said.
As information, Basarnas has recorded an increase in the number of earthquake victims in NTT.
“As of the third day yesterday, at 23.30 WIB, we have compiled the total number of victims at 202 people, with 70 dead and 132 injured,” said Basarnas Director of Operations, Rear Admiral Yudhi Bramantyo, in a press conference on Tuesday (18/8/2026).
He detailed that the 132 injured consisted of 40 seriously injured and 92 lightly injured. He said officers are still sweeping the earthquake-affected locations.
“The operation we are carrying out is only sweeping because based on reports or data input from the victims, there are no longer any of their relatives, neighbours or colleagues recorded as still being searched for,” he said.
The Basarnas team is currently focusing on assisting the medical recovery team for victims, especially in hard-to-reach areas such as Lamba Leda District, East Manggarai Regency.
