PAREPARE, South Sulawesi: The Parepare District Police in South Sulawesi dumped into the sea at least 10 boxes containing 105,000 firecrackers they had confiscated from passenger boats last December.

Comr. Dadang D.J., the Parepare police chief, said the move was aimed at encouraging the public at large to be aware that any explosive devices were banned because they could pose a serious danger to the public and themselves.

The firecrackers were seized from passengers of the Aqua Mas and Tidar ferries belonging to state-owned shipping firm PT Pelni, ahead of the Islamic Idul Fitri festivities in December.

Wednesday's move to dump the firecrackers in the Senggol area was witnessed by local community leaders and villagers. --Antara
