104 Garuda Indonesia Aircraft Back in Operation by June 2026
President Prabowo Subianto delivered positive news regarding the recovery of the national carrier Garuda Indonesia. During the Annual Session of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR RI) and the Joint Session of the House of Representatives and Regional Representatives Council (DPR-DPD RI) for 2026 at the MPR/DPR RI Building in Jakarta on Friday (14/8), the President revealed that an additional 20 aircraft had been successfully reactivated by June 2026.
The addition brings the total number of Garuda Indonesia aircraft that have returned to operation to 104 units. This achievement is regarded as a strong signal of the airline’s performance recovery after years of being burdened by financial losses.
“By June 2026, the total number of aircraft we have successfully reactivated has increased by 20, bringing the total to 104 aircraft,” President Prabowo said in his speech.
The President explained that when the government began its restructuring efforts, the condition of Garuda Indonesia’s fleet was quite concerning, with dozens of aircraft grounded or out of operation because they could not yet be repaired. However, through a consistent reactivation programme, the number of airworthy aircraft has continued to grow.
The recovery of the fleet is believed to open significant opportunities for the company to return to profitability. “Garuda Indonesia has been losing money for years; now there is hope for it to become profitable again,” he stressed.
Despite the positive trend, President Prabowo acknowledged that external factors remain a challenge. Global geopolitical conditions, particularly the conflict in the Middle East, have also put pressure on the operational performance of the national carrier.
According to the President, were it not for the obstacles posed by the geopolitical conflict, Garuda Indonesia could potentially have recorded a profit earlier, namely in July 2026. Nevertheless, the government remains optimistic that this improving trend will be maintained.
“We now hope that by the beginning of 2027 it will start to turn a profit,” President Prabowo concluded, emphasising his hope that the recovery of Garuda Indonesia’s performance will continue on a sustainable basis.
