The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported that 102 residents have been evacuated due to thick smoke from a fire at the Jatiwaringin Final Disposal Site (TPA) in Tangerang Regency, Banten. Abdul Muhari, Head of the BNPB Data, Information, and Communication Centre, stated on Saturday that residents were evacuated to avoid the harmful effects of the spreading smoke from the burning waste material. “Currently, joint officers are continuing to work on handling the situation,” he said. He confirmed that medical teams have been placed on standby around the clock at evacuation sites and affected areas to anticipate adverse health impacts, such as acute respiratory infections (ISPA), among the community. To strengthen the social and technical response on the ground, the Tangerang Regency Government declared a state of emergency for the fire at the Jatiwaringin landfill on Tuesday (30/6). The emergency status was issued through Tangerang Regent Decree Number 609 of 2026 and is valid for 14 days, from 1 to 14 July 2026. The BNPB Operations Control Centre confirmed that as of today, joint inter-agency task force teams are still working intensively to extinguish the fire via land routes and are optimising aerial firefighting operations with support from BNPB. The aerial operation, involving water bombing, is considered urgent as active hotspots are still detected in several locations within the piles of waste material, which are several metres deep.
