102 Residents Evacuated as Jatiwaringin Landfill Fire Triggers Emergency Status

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported that 102 residents have been forced to evacuate following a fire at the Jatiwaringin Final Disposal Site (TPA) in Tangerang Regency, Banten. The evacuation was carried out to protect residents from the thick smoke still blanketing the affected area.

As of Saturday, joint firefighting teams continue to battle the blaze. Abdul Muhari, Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Centre, stated that the evacuation was a precautionary measure against the health risks posed by the smoke. “102 residents have been evacuated to avoid the dangers of smoke exposure from the burning waste material,” he said in a report from Jakarta on Saturday. He added that joint personnel are continuing their efforts to bring the fire under control.

In addition to firefighting operations, the BNPB has ensured that health services remain available for affected residents. Medical teams are on standby 24 hours a day at evacuation sites and in areas impacted by the smoke. This measure aims to anticipate health issues, particularly acute respiratory infections (ISPA), which may arise from prolonged exposure. Priority is being given to vulnerable groups, including infants, toddlers, the elderly, and residents with pre-existing medical conditions who are at higher risk.

To accelerate the handling of the disaster, the Tangerang Regency Government has declared a state of emergency for the Jatiwaringin landfill fire. The status was established through Tangerang Regent Decree Number 609 of 2026 and is effective for 14 days, from 1 July to 14 July 2026. The emergency status provides a legal basis for the local government to expedite resource mobilisation and strengthen cross-agency coordination in managing the fire and its impacts. The BNPB’s Operations Control Centre (Pusdalops) confirmed that ground and aerial firefighting efforts are being continuously optimised.
