1,000 workers go on strike
Around 1,000 workers of PT Cometa Can Corp., a can factory, went on strike yesterday in front of the factory's office in Pluit Muara Karang, West Jakarta.
The workers demanded that the regional minimum wage be raised from Rp 3,800 (US$1.74) to Rp 6,000. They also pushed for management to increase their monthly salaries and fulfill their obligation to provide worker benefits such as health insurance.
The workers, carrying banners and posters during the peaceful demonstration, vowed to continue the strike until management met their demands.
Suara Pembaruan reported that the company's management promised to hold negotiations with worker representatives to end the labor dispute. (yns)
