1,000 firms have no set address

SAMARINDA, East Kalimantan (JP): Officials of the local
government office of statistics could hardly believe their eyes
when they found that 1,000 of the 1,600 companies in Samarinda
have no clear address.

The local government has just completed a survey to determine
the number of registered companies in the Samarinda mayoralty.
The undertaking is part of an economic census to be held next
year.

"About 1,000 companies' headquarters cannot be found at the
addresses they gave when they registered with the government,"
chief of the statistical office Nyoto Widodo told Antara.

He theorized that the problem arose because many firms have
moved or gone bankrupt and have not informed the government.

But it is also possible that the companies gave the wrong
address to evade taxes, he said. "But this needs to be proven,"
he added. (pan)
