1,000 cases of cancer a year

SEMARANG, Central Java (JP): About 1,000 cases of cancer are found each year in the city, a health official says.

Head of the Health Office's division for Prevention and Eradication of Contagious Diseases Gondo Kresnanto told The Jakarta Post that nationally, 100 cases are found out of every 100,000 people each year.

He said there has been a significant increase in the number of cancer victims lately, on both the local and national levels. He said that this was due to the increase of life-span, industrialization and the changing environment.

Among the most common types are cervix, breast, skin, nose, larynx and lymph cancers.

Early detection and prevention are the best ways of preventing the disease since the best methods of treatment depend greatly on the stage of the cancer at the time it was detected, Kresnanto said.(har/pwn)
